What These Words Mean
Freedom
For Jia, freedom is connected to being able to choose his own direction and continue moving forward even when life changes unexpectedly.
His drawing of a suitcase reflects a moment of transition. As he prepared to leave Hunan for surgery, he was carrying both the practical things he needed and the uncertainty of what was ahead.
Courage
Jia’s idea of courage is not about feeling fearless. It is about continuing forward even when something feels unfamiliar or frightening.
Before surgery, he felt nervous. When asked what he might say to younger children going through a similar experience, he said, “Don’t be afraid.” In some ways, this was also something he was saying to himself.
Care
Care appears in Jia’s story through small but meaningful acts between people.
Before leaving for surgery, he woke to find that a classmate had left him a farewell note wishing him a safe journey. That gesture stayed with him. He also spoke about a student leader in his class who had treated him with kindness and supported him at school. These experiences seem to shape the kind of person he hopes to become for others.
Someone He Hopes to Become Like

Building Things That Matter to Him
Outside the hospital, Jia enjoys building complex systems in Minecraft.
He described creating redstone mechanisms and technical builds that require patience, experimentation, and repeated adjustment. He also wanted to show his saved world to classmates, suggesting that these projects are not only something he builds for himself, but something he is proud to share.
This part of Jia’s life adds another dimension to his future self: someone who is curious, persistent, and willing to keep working on something until it takes shape.
